Nutrition plays an important role in growth, health and productivity of birds

Good quality feed is essential for:

    1. For proper growth and attaining proper body weight

    2. Better feed efficiency

    3. Improved health and immunity – nutrients maintain bird’s health and boost immunity, hence preventing the birds from getting infected.

    4. Increase production – good quality feed yields better production (body weight gain in broilers and egg mass in layers)

    5. With increased productivity and better feed efficiency, margin of production will be high.

    6. Poor quality feed reduces productivity. In addition, causes deficiency disorders affecting the health of the birds. Low quality of feed due to presence of mycotoxins, antinutritional factors, contamination with microbes or toxicants or heavy metals can adversely affect performance and also liability.

Additionally, alertness does not end at bright eyes alone, but also the ability of birds to run for shelter when it sense danger.

    Response to external stimulus generally.

    1. Physical Appearance

Bright eyes: Clear, alert, and shiny eyes are a good sign.

Smooth, clean feathers: Down should be fluffy and not ruffled or matted.

Clean vent area: The area under the tail should be clean and free from pasting (dried feces stuck around the vent).

Firm, plump body: Chicks should feel well-fed but not bloated.

    2. Behavior

Active and alert: Healthy chicks move around, peep, and respond to stimuli.

Good posture: They should stand upright and not huddle excessively unless cold.

Curiosity: Interested in their environment and food.

    3. Eating and Drinking

Regular feed intake: Chicks eat frequently and peck at feed actively.

Drink water regularly: They should be observed drinking often, especially in the first few days.

Lighting enhances birds activity to eat which make them grow and develop well. Also, uniformity of light in the pen house will contribute to the uniformity of the flock.
