Good hand hygiene and decontamination practices are a simple, yet highly effective way to prevent pathogen introduction and transmission from hands that have come into contact with contaminated equipment, the environment, and organic material which may contain harmful micro-organisms. Equally, good hand hygiene practices are also highly beneficial for staff health. Hand hygiene measures are classified as two separate processes: hand washing and hand sanitation.
Hand washing is the use of warm water and soap and should be performed at designated hand washing stations and as part of the on-farm showering procedure. At hand washing points, nail brushes should be provided to effectively remove organic material from hands and underneath nails.
Hand sanitation is conducted via the use of alcohol-based hand rubs and is most effective when the hands are not visibly soiled.
