Filler are added to premix as binder such as oil, vitamin and trace minerals, since the premix are required in minute amount.

Fillers or diluents (e.g., rice hulls, limestone, salt, etc.) are added to premixes to achieve a constant inclusion rate of the premix even when some ingredients are changed. For example, a mineral premix included at 0.15% of the diet is formulated to deliver 120 ppm of zinc (Zn) in one kilogram of complete feed may change the source of Zn from sulfate monohydrate (ZnSO4·H2O) containing 35.5% Zn to chloride (ZnCl2) containing 48% Zn. Thus, a smaller amount of ZnCl2 will be needed than from ZnSO4. Then, the filler will be used to account for the difference in the inclusion of Zn sources so the premix can continue to be included in the formulation at a rate of 0.15%. Some fillers may be nutritionally inert (e.g., rice hulls, etc.) whereas other have nutritional value (e.g., salt, limestone, etc.). Therefore, it is important to consider the full nutrient matrix value of premixes to ensure diets are properly formulated.

Premixes are used to reduce the complexity of adding small amounts of ingredients such as vitamins, and other nutrients into a large batch for mixing – so instead of weighing small amounts of many individual ingredients they are combined into one premix and the fillers are used to ’round out’ the volume of the addition.

improve specific properties, make the product cheaper, or a mixture of both

In premix manufacturing, fillers are added to serve several purposes:
Functional Roles of Fillers
1. *Bulk density adjustment*: Fillers help adjust the bulk density of the premix to ensure uniform mixing and flow.
2. *Dilution of active ingredients*: Fillers dilute the active ingredients to achieve the desired concentration, making it easier to handle and mix.
3. *Anti-caking agents*: Fillers can act as anti-caking agents, preventing the premix from becoming lumpy or caked during storage or transportation.
4. *Cost reduction*: Fillers can be less expensive than active ingredients, reducing the overall cost of the premix.
5. *Standardization*: Fillers help standardize the premix formulation, ensuring consistency in quality and performance.

Premix in a feed mill is a blend of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other additives that’s added to feed to improve nutritional value.

Filler materials are particles added to resin or binders (plastics, composites, concrete) that can improve specific properties, make the product cheaper or a mixture of both.
