Public Poultry
Group Description
Varied forms of poultry diseases occurs in all corners of the world. Some have regional impact while others affect a larger global area. They continue to cause serious losses to poultry producers on a day-to-day basis. Managing and controlling them is something that a producer must always be ready with. On larger significance, infections have caused serious restraint to international trade. The SEC community has the advantage of having members represent different geographic regions and some important emerging markets. SECs poultry community puts forth this interest group titled “Poultry disease management and control” to promote exchange of information that would help community members learn from each other’s experiences. Come, join this interest group, and share your experiences and views.

Adding a bis-chelated trace minerals can improve the gut barrier function and support skin and footpad health.

Here are some strategies to enhance broiler skin quality:
1. Nutrition
Adequate Protein Levels: Ensure the feed has sufficient high-quality protein to support healthy skin development.
Fatty Acids: Include essential fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6 to improve skin elasticity and prevent dryness.
Vitamin and Mineral Supplementation:
Vitamin E and Selenium: Enhance skin integrity and reduce oxidative stress.
Vitamin A: Promotes healthy skin development and repair.
Zinc: Vital for skin repair and growth.
Balanced Energy Levels: Avoid excess energy in the diet, which can lead to fat deposition under the skin and make it prone to tearing.
2. Environmental Management
Temperature Control: Avoid overheating or chilling. Sudden temperature changes can affect skin condition.

Here are key strategies to enhance broiler skin quality:
1. Nutritional Management
Balanced Diet: Ensure a diet rich in essential nutrients, especially:
Vitamins A, E, and C: Support skin integrity and reduce oxidative stress.
Zinc and Selenium: Promote skin healing and reduce inflammation.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Improve skin elasticity and reduce dermatitis.
Protein Quality: Provide easily digestible proteins for optimal growth and skin repair.
Additives:
Use natural or synthetic antioxidants to reduce oxidative stress.
Probiotics and prebiotics enhance gut health, indirectly benefiting skin.
2. Environmental Control
Temperature and Humidity: Maintain optimal conditions to prevent heat stress and excessive moisture that can weaken the skin.
Ventilation: Proper airflow minimizes ammonia buildup, which can irritate and damage skin.
Litter Management: Keep litter dry to reduce footpad dermatitis and hock burns.
3. Health Management
Vaccination and Biosecurity: Protect against diseases that may affect skin quality (e.g., infectious bursal disease).
Parasite Control: Prevent mites and lice that can damage skin.
Antibiotic Alternatives: Use herbal or natural growth promoters to maintain overall health.
4. Handling and Transport
Minimize stress during catching, handling, and transport to reduce skin bruising and scratches.
Train workers in proper handling techniques.
5. Genetic Selection
Opt for broiler breeds known for good skin quality and resistance to skin-related issues.
6. Preventing Skin Lesions
Address common issues such as:
Scratches: Avoid overcrowding to minimize aggression.
Blisters: Improve flooring and bedding materials to reduce pressure sores.
Dermatitis: Maintain hygiene and ensure a balanced diet.
7. Post-Slaughter Handling
Proper scalding and plucking methods help maintain skin integrity.
Avoid excessive scalding temperatures that may damage the skin.
8. Regular Monitoring
Monitor flock health, growth rates, and skin condition frequently to address issues early.
-
Regularly cleaning and disinfecting the chicken coop and the surrounding environment.
-
Providing enough drinking water and feed, Reducing stress and Ensuring a suitable and balanced feed formula.
