Group Description
As we know, poultry production systems are continually evolving. One of the primary causes that determines feeding and nutrition is the improvement made in the genetic potential of poultry birds ( both broilers and layers) and this is done to harness the best potential in the shortest period and with best efficiencies. There are many other factors that have a bearing on feeding and nutrition and some of them are driven by consumers, societal needs, and to cater to the production of specialized poultry products. In some cases, feeding and nutritional may also be determined by government regulations, cost of production, access to desired raw materials and other environmental concerns.
As members of the poultry community – we represent different global regions and different scenarios that control feeding and nutrition, and your experiences will be useful for every member in the community. We feel that knowledge shared on this platform will be useful to all in either improving operations, gaining on production or for taking corrective actions. Come, join this interest group, and share your experiences and views.

Forced molting is a controversial practice in poultry farming. It involves withholding feed, light, or other resources to induce a temporary cessation of egg production, causing the hens to rest and rejuvenate their reproductive systems
-
Most important moult for producers. Moulting often ends by July and the hen will start to lay again
-
The purpose of forced moulting is therefore to increase egg production, egg quality, and profitability of flocks in their second or subsequent laying phases, by not allowing the hen’s body the necessary time to rejuvenate during the natural cycle of feather replenishment.
-
If you’re concerned about forced molting, you can look for eggs from producers that use labels like “Certified Humane,” “Animal Welfare Approved,” or “United Egg Producers Certified”. You can also buy from a producer you know and trust
-
Drawbacks
Forced molting can cause stress and discomfort for hens. It can also make hens more susceptible to disease, such as Salmonella. During the recovery period, force-molted hens may also be more aggressive.
-
Forced molting can be an important tool for egg producers, but it can also cause stress and discomfort for hens and may increase their susceptibility to disease
