Semen is collected from the male and evaluated for motility, viability, and concentration. Semen is best collected in the early morning, twice a week.

    Equipment needed

A small glass funnel with a stem plugged with wax

    An inseminating syringe

    A wide mouthed glass vial

    A small pyrex semen cup

A large flask to hold water at 180°C to 200°C for short term semen holding

For insemination, when holding the hen upright, pressure is applied to the abdomen around the vent, particularly on the left side. This causes the cloaca to evert and the oviduct to protrude, so that a syringe or plastic straw can be inserted ~1 in.

Depending on the farm or laboratory’s goals, there may be additional steps in the process, such as semen dilution, storage, and evaluation.

The most reliable method for inseminating poultry is to deposit semen directly into the mid vaginal area.

Artificial insemination (AI) in broiler breeders is a technique used to ensure efficient fertilization, especially in cases where natural mating may be challenging due to the size and weight of the birds

Insemination in broilers, or any poultry, is typically done through artificial insemination (AI) to enhance breeding efficiency, especially in commercial poultry farming.

The semen is deposited into the female’s reproductive tract.
