Pipping is the breaking of a shell by a chick and coming out of it to begin its new breathe of air.

The chick uses a special egg tooth, a small, sharp bump on the top of its beak, to break and saw around the shell. Pipping can be exhausting for the chick, so it needs time to rest and fluff up before moving on. Chicks won’t need food or water for at least 24 hours after pipping.
