    Depending on where you live, molting may start as early as August or as late as November. Most of us are going to be right in the middle of molting season in late September and October.

    Birds can pant, like your dog, during the summer to cool down. Panting releases heat through evaporation of moisture along the bird’s mouth, throat, and lungs.

    As air temperatures increase towards 85 F, the bird will try to lose heat through evaporative cooling, panting. Panting creates more heat through muscle activity. As a result, the bird will increase its water intake, but not enough to keep up with the losses through respiration and urine excretion.
