- The ideal temperature for chicks is between 87–92° F (30–33° C) for the first day of life. The temperature should be reduced by 2–3° C per week until it reaches 21° C.
- Humidity: The ideal relative humidity is 40–60%.
- Air quality: The air should not contain too much ammonia or carbon dioxide.
- Water: Chicks need access to high-quality water. For the first 2–3 days, you can add electrolytes, glucose, and vitamins to the water to help with stress.
- Feed: Chicks need access to high-quality feed. You can spread feed on newspaper for a couple of days to help them learn to eat from the feeder.
- Lighting: For the first three days, provide 2fc of light for 24 hours. Light stimulation encourages chicks to eat and drink.
- Litter: Provide fresh, properly conditioned litter with controlled moisture.
- Ventilation: Ensure the brooder has minimal ventilation. You can check the fan run time, inlet door opening, and pressure.
- Brooder preparation: Clean and disinfect the brooding area, feeders, and waterers at least two weeks before the chicks arrive.
