The Five Domains model differs from the Five Freedoms model, which focuses on meeting basic needs, while the Five Domains model also considers positive experiences and an animal’s mental state. <div> </div>
The Five Domains model was developed by Professor David Mellor at Massey University in New Zealand. It’s used by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums and other organizations to assess animal welfare
The Five Domains model is based on the idea that the first four domains help inform the fifth domain, which is the animal’s mental state. The model is considered to better reflect current scientific understanding of animal welfare than the Five Freedoms model.
The five domains were: (1) nutrition, (2) environment, (3) health, (4) behaviour and (5) mental state. The first three domains focussed attention on internal imbalances or disturbances which had nutritional, environmental and health origins.
