Poultry should spend less than 24 hours in a lairage, which is the area where animals are kept before slaughter. The risk of death during lairage increases as the time spent there increases.
Poultry birds should be kept in lairage sheds for the minimum time possible, ideally one to two hours, to ensure the animals’ welfare and the slaughter operation’s flow
Maximal feed withdrawal of 16–24 h before slaughter (including time on farm, transport and lairage) is recommended. After this time, animals should be fed with moderate amounts of food. EU legislation states that animals must be fed if the lairage time exceeds 12 h.
