Free-Range System:
- In this system, poultry are allowed to roam freely outdoors, foraging for food and engaging in natural behaviors. It provides a more natural environment but can increase the risk of diseases and predators.
Deep Litter System:
- This system involves keeping poultry in a shed or house where the floor is covered with bedding material (like sawdust, straw, or rice husk). As the bedding material accumulates over time, it decomposes and provides warmth while controlling odors. It’s commonly used in broiler and layer farming.
Cage System:
- Poultry are kept in individual cages, often in multi-tiered structures. This system is widely used for egg production as it minimizes space requirements and helps control the environment. However, it raises animal welfare concerns because it restricts movement.
Battery Cage System:
- A more intensive version of the cage system, it involves hens being kept in small cages where they have very limited space to move. It is efficient for egg production but criticized for the lack of comfort for the birds.
Free-Range Layer System:
- Layers (hens) are allowed to roam freely within a confined space or yard during the day, while being housed in a shelter at night. This system aims to balance natural behaviors with production.
Organic System:
- This system adheres to organic farming principles, where poultry are raised without synthetic chemicals or antibiotics. They are typically raised in more natural conditions, with access to outdoor space and organic feed.
Intensive System:
- This system involves a high-density housing setup where poultry are raised in large numbers in confined spaces. This system is highly efficient and used for commercial broiler production but has concerns regarding animal welfare.
Semi-Intensive System:
- A combination of both free-range and intensive systems, where poultry are allowed to roam within a controlled environment or have access to a limited outdoor space, balancing production and welfare.
