The hatching window is the period from the emergence of the first chick to the last chick in a given hatcher.
In ideal, uniform conditions with modern single-stage incubation, this window is usually kept at 12-24 hours for broilers.
In practice, commercial broiler hatcheries may experience a window of 24 to 48 hours, though a shorter window is preferred to reduce problems like dehydration in chicks that hatch early and must wait for others to finish. This prolonged hatching window results in delayed access of water and feed to chicks.
Reducing variability in hatch time helps ensure the entire group of chicks can be managed more uniformly for health and performance.
Factors Affecting the Hatching Window-
- The precision of incubation parameters such as temperature, humidity, ventilation, and turning influences the spread of hatch times
- Egg characteristics like shell conductance, size, breeder flock age, and egg storage time also play a role but are more pronounced in mixed batches
- Machine design and uniformity of airflow and temperature throughout the hatcher are critical in narrowing the window, with modern single-stage incubators offering better control compared to multistage systems
By closely managing the hatching window, broiler producers can maximize chick uniformity, health, and overall flock performance.
