The term is used to represent the amount of material that is delivered to the scale after the feeder screw from the ingredient bin is turned off – so the distance from the terminal end of the feeder screw to the surface of material in the scale – the length of this distance may be different for different ingredients; more or less material – thus each ingredient may have a different free-fall value – the batching computer will take this into account when filling the scale – as target weight is approached the screw feeder will stop and wait for the free-fall material to weigh and if not at target will jog the feeder screw. If you are batching manually you will train yourself to stop the screw feeder before target weight achieved and jog on-and-off till target reached.
