September 7, 2025 at 9:46 am in reply to: Role of particle size in FCR improvement

Young chicks (broilers/layers): fine feed/crumbles → better intake and uniformity.

Older broilers: medium–coarse particles, good-quality pellets (reduce fines).

Layers: coarse grains + coarse calcium (2–4 mm) with some fine fraction, mash or partly pelleted feed.

FCR improvement comes from the right particle size distribution and pellet durability, tailored to bird type and age.

    1. Ingredient Particle Size

    Broilers (meat birds):

Starter phase (0–10 days): Fine particles (<0.5–0.8 mm) are preferred. Chicks have small beaks and underdeveloped gizzards, so finer feed ensures uniform intake and digestibility.

Grower–finisher (11 days onwards): Medium-coarse particles (1–2 mm for grains, 0.5–1 mm for protein/mineral sources) improve gizzard development, slow passage rate, enhance nutrient digestion, and improve FCR.

Too fine feed in older birds → poor gizzard function, faster passage, lower nutrient absorption.

Too coarse feed in chicks → poor intake and uneven growth.

    Layers (egg birds):

Require coarse particles (especially Ca source.

Coarse grinding particle improve FCR most efficiently due to improve enzymetic secretions , Gizzard functioning and prolong feed stay time in bird.

Use of Pellet binder and Pelleting aid feed additives also help to extend Pellet Die life.

Acceptable Storage Loss for Maize in Silos (Pakistan & Subcontinent):

Well-managed modern silos with aeration & fumigation:
👉 0.5 – 1.5% per month is typical and considered acceptable.

Seasonal / short-term storage (up to 6 months):
👉 Total loss target should be ≤2–3%.

Long-term storage (9–12 months, hot + humid conditions):
👉 Up to 4–5% loss may still be considered “normal”.
