To reduce costs, aquafeeds can be supplemented with protein, energy, and nutritional alternatives such as Azolla, earthworms, insects, aquatic plants, oilseeds, corn, soybeans, flour, aquatic plants (such as spirulina and chlorella), probiotics, and food waste reduction techniques.

    Alternatives to materials and methods

    Azolla:

Azolla is a fast-growing aquatic fern that is rich in protein and other nutrients, which can be a cost-effective alternative to fish feed.

    Earthworms and insects:

Locally available earthworms (such as earthworms) and other insects can be used as a source of protein for fish, which can be an alternative to commercial feeds.

    Aquatic plants:

Various aquatic plants and algae, such as spirulina and chlorella, are good sources of vitamins and minerals. Their use can be used to increase the nutritional value of the feed.

    Corn, soybeans, and flour:

Corn, soybeans, and flour can be used as one of the main ingredients in feed. If these are used by increasing domestic production and reducing imports, it is possible to reduce feed costs.

    Fishmeal/Probiotics:

Various probiotics and enzymes can be used to increase the digestibility of fish, which helps in reducing feed wastage and improving feed conversion ratio (FCR) and ultimately reducing costs by accelerating fish growth.

Maintain pond DO around 5–8 mg/L to keep fish healthy and avoid stress or mortality.

Ensure adequate floor and drinking space.

    Unlimited access to drinking water.

Feeding diet with high nutrients density to take care of low feed intake during heat stress.

    Good housing.

Feeding Broilers at the cooler period of the day.

Provision of good ventilation and moderate humidity.

Administration of feeds additives such as VitC,Sodium bicarbonate in feeds and electrolytes in water to cushion heat effects.

The use of paddle Fans in the pen to provide ventilation and improve air movement.

Foggers can be installed in the pen to wet the roof as well as sprinkling birds to mitigate heat stress effects.
